Interview with Barista Lucy Cooper

1). Can you tell us something about your career as a barista?

I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for about 8 years, mostly floor work as a waitress. Since moving to Melbourne in 2011 I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about making and serving coffee, not just carrying it.

2). How long have you been working for this job?

I’ve worked at Don Vincenzo’s on Brunswick street for 3 months.

3). Can you share your most exciting moment that you had in any time past?

I guess you mean in relation to making coffee. I remember the first time I received a compliment from a customer on a coffee I had made. It was a skinny Café Latte, he had a beard. It felt great.

4). How would you go about managing time or making a coffee for a time-starved customer to when identical orders come through in a continuous basis?

As a rule, I make coffees in the order they come in, most customers are understanding of the fact that everyone wants their own drink as soon as possible. This being said, if more than one customer was in a particular rush I would look at what different coffees needed to be made urgently and make enough milk to pour several at once, so that they have to wait an equal amount of time.

5). Do you think perseverance and crafty barista has crowd-pulling secrets to lure customers in the shop?

It depends on the customers. Of course it takes practice to become a skilled barista (I have a lot of room for improvement) but I think the most important part of the coffee is what it looks and tastes like in the end, not the tricks that go into how it’s made.

6). Not to mention, when we go for having a coffee in different cafes we have been discovering differing tastes. What is the ground-reality for happening this? Is that the ergonomic issue or because of variation in performace rhythms and level on the part of the barista such as handling of penerallo, swirling or tabbing of milk jar?

There are many contributing factors that will change the taste of a coffee. There are different types of beans (Kona, Robusta, Arabica) which are grown in different places and have different variations in taste. The way the beans are ground at a particular café will also affect the taste. The barista makes sure the machine is clean and functioning properly, the grind is flat and packed tight, the milk and the pour of the milk.

7). What is the significance of pouring the eclectic eye-popping drawings and arts such as inverted pyramid and heart on top? Is that because these arts and inviting decorations help to cope with visual behaviour of the customers eyes?

Patterns on a coffee do not change how the coffee tastes. They are a good indication that the barista who has made the drink knows what they are doing because if you can’t make nice milk, or if you have not been pouring coffee very long, you just will not be able to make the pattern. Making nice coffee is a great skill, and all baristas that consider themselves as such take much pride in the products they make, because even though a coffee would taste the same without the pattern, it is enjoyable to feel like some effort has gone into the drink placed before you, which is why I think patterns are important.

8). Generally speaking, why do all walks of life enjoy coffee? Is it because coffee is a mood enhancing entity or something else?

Caffeine is both addictive and stimulating . I think these are the main factors, enhanced by the lifestyle our society embraces. It is integrated into our culture. When meeting a friend for coffee, conversation is stimulated, when needing to start work in the morning without having gotten much sleep, coffee kick starts your brain. Not to mention that when it’s made well, it tastes good.

9). What kind of ideas would you like to ventilate through our journalistic window to our valued readers about the time-honoured popularity of coffee in the global perspective?

We should all pay more attention than we do to where the things we use and consume come from, not just in the case of coffee but for everything. An awareness of the origins of these products allows us to enjoy the things we love whilst to an extent alleviating one’s own social conscience. Buy beans you know (and are comfortable with) the origin of, find a café you like, and support them if you think they are doing a good thing and deserve to keep doing it, or try making it yourself. It’s fun and it’s easy to learn.

Battle on publishing a book

My time-honoured experiences and literary- battle on publishing a book:

By : Shiva Neupane

Publishing a book is an unquestionably a great deal of titanic struggle and great sacrifice in anyone’s life. What makes a person writer are disciple, focus, patience, continuity, hard work, untiring linguistic guts and never-say-die attitude. If you are thinking to become a writer and published author you should contemplate the aforesaid inalienable things.

After having contemplated these crucial things, you should make sure your writing ritual is living not a dead. To dreaming something is very comfortable imaginary-business it only needs a free thought-fuel which is tucked away ubiquitously in every one’s head. It is challenging to give a shape for imagination into our concrete action. This is the reason why must of the people seem to have broken in their action plan.

It is very indispensable the fact that action should be taken very instantly after having made the projection of our dream in the back of our head. By action here I mean the continuous effort in reading, writing and re-writing. If you are dreaming to become a writer first it is important to become a good reader and listener. To my mind, the moment you are good reader you can go for spearheading along the trajectories of writing –waves in the sky of linguistic freedom.

Help Pradeep

“A humble request to you all to help one of our own who is in need of our moral, emotional and financial support”.

An Appeal
With dreams of better future and determination to make it true, Pradeep Tuladhar Sikarmi along with his wife Roshani Rimal landed in Australia on 26th of April, 2009. Everything was smooth and beautiful.
Around October 2010, Pradeep discovered a lump on his right calf. After a couple of weeks he went to the doctor. The doctors took a sample of the lump and sent it for some tests. On 26th December 2010, Pradeep’s doctor advised him that he had a rare form of cancer (Synovial Sarcoma) and the treatment involved going through the procedure to remove the lump and in case it was unsuccessful there were chances that he would have to lose his leg to save his life. Pradeep had to go through 6 cycles of chemotherapy over a period of 7 months. After chemotherapy he then had to go through radiotherapy for another 3 and half months. On 21st July, 2011 Pradeep had to undergo surgery to remove the lump in is calf. The doctors were happy with the way the surgery went and more so because they were able to save his leg.
On a regular check-up appointment, it was discovered that the cells from his leg had moved on to his lungs. On 21st July, 2011 he had to undergo another surgery to remove the tumour from his lungs. After this surgery the doctors decided to monitor him once every 4 months.
Once again on 1st December, 2011 when Pradeep went for his check – up, a CT scan showed that the cancerous tumour in his lungs had returned. This time the number of tumour had increased and reached the 4th stage, which according to the doctors was beyond cure. The doctors advised him that there was only one standard process of treatment to treat a patient like him and asked him if he would be able to handle it. Pradeep requested the doctors to do whatever possible and that he was ready to face anything that came his way. At the moment, Pradeep has completed 3 gentle cycles of chemotherapy targeted to the affected area of his lungs.
In spite of what has happened Pradeep and Roshani are very positive and hopeful that better days will come and that they can continue this journey together for many years to come.
Dear Friends, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, medicine costs a lot of money. On top of these expenses there are day to day expenses like food, transport, tuition fee and others. Since the time Pradeep was biopsied with cancer, he and Roshani have spent over $22000 out of their pockets, the doctors have reduced 10% of their charges, 5% contributed by the social workers at the hospital and the rest covered by insurance. The doctors, nurses, social workers have been very generous towards Pradeep and Roshani. Now it is our turn to support them in this battle against faith. Let us all come together and extend our support to this family in any possible way we can.
Yeti Football Club, Melbourne organised a fund raising morning amongst its members on 25th March, 2012 at Clifton Park, Victoria Street, Brunswick and raised $1300. All funds raised will go to Pradeep and Roshani.

Project 300 by Aylin Ahmet

Close your eyes and imagine what it would be like to grow up in world where nothing is taken
for granted. A world where the simple price of a coffee can amount to the difference between
comfort and struggle. Where basic things like books, pens and a good education are a
privilege not afforded to everyone. Cast your mind back to your childhood and replace your
suburban surroundings with the Nepalese countryside. Where planned streets and roads are
replaced by scarcely scattered buildings and rolling hills, with opportunities for schooling few
and far between. Where security gives way to uncertainty, and life as you know it is nothing
like you’ve known it. Now that your mind has carried you there in thought, open your eyes and
continue that spiritual journey in the Project 300 exhibition at the Matt Irwin Gallery from Friday
May 11.
